The Service

Detox kitchen came on to the healthy eating scene a few years ago with a couple of central London based delis. From here, they grew into what could be considered a lifestyle brand and added their own exercise studio as well as a food delivery service. Their branding and Instagram shots are unquestionably aspirational!

We are here to talk about their food delivery service. This aims to take the hassle out of healthy eating. They provide a number of different packages, including ‘Protein’, ‘Vegan’ and even ‘Mama’. Each package is aimed at the general goals and requirements of clients. As with a number of other companies, we feel a little let down that the calorie goal for each client is the same within the package. Companies offering these services really need to understand that we do not all do the same amount of activity; we are not all the same size and we certainly are not all of the same sex! We are individuals and all have different energy requirements.

Anyway, nutritional outburst over, let’s move on to delivery. This is certainly a strength. They freshly prepare your food each day and then deliver overnight to your doorstep. A lovely surprise awaits you each morning. Sadly, at this point they only deliver to London postcodes however we did hear on the grapevine this could be expanding soon.

This does come at quite a price. For the protein package, if you are buying below a 15-day package, it is £42 each day, however this price does come down the more days that are purchased. For this, you do receive quite a bit of nutritious stash; breakfast, lunch, dinner, a pudding, a juice as well as a nut pot and even a snack!

The Taste

We have to say that the food was fabulous. It was both tasty and filling. We absolutely loved the fresh and fruity pineapple sushi bowl for lunch as well as the creamy almond blueberry bircher for breakfast. It all hit the spot, that’s for sure.

If we were to be critical of the menu, we did find that it was geared towards summer. On some days we found that we had absolutely no food that could be heated. Perfect on a hot summers day but when we arrived home after battling the wind, rain and cold, all we wanted was a warming dinner!

We did not see anywhere where we could exclude certain food on the premise of disliking certain ingredients, only a box for medically related allergies. We do feel like this option could push our taste score to 5 stars.

Health

All of Detox Kitchen’s food is dairy, refined sugar and wheat free making it super helpful for a lot of people. They also use only free-range meat and sustainable fish.

We did think generally the Detox Kitchen meals lived up to their healthy reputation. They were balanced, made from scratch and contained a wide variety of fruit and veg.

We were however disappointed with the low-calorie counts. We feel that this is an area that needs to be addressed, and more options added. We also noticed that at the check-out stage, you are able to add on an adaptogen chai latte. It sounds great but for us, this is a little faddy and somehow devalued the healthy image they promote. The science on adaptogens is still heavy on hope and light on evidence.

Sustainability

Sadly, Detox Kitchen are yet to switch to more sustainable packaging. They still use plastic. Although they do shout about the fact it is made from recycled material we still believe, with the sheer volume of tubs they send around London every day, this is something they need to prioritise. Plus, they deliver in a cardboard box to each customer, each day. Again, this feels very wasteful.

On a more positive note, they do buy their fish from sustainable sources and all of their meat is free-range.

Final Verdict

This is a lovely service and will definitely up your insta image! The food is great, and it will get you on track for that much needed healthier life. If you have the cash, definitely invest in a 3-day detox, it can be the kick start to a more long-term plan.
